The 49-year-old soldier Nikolai Mikitenko, who on the night of October 11 committed an act of self-immolation at Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kiev, died of burns in a hospital. This was announced on Facebook by his daughter Yulia today, October 14.

The public organization “Vidsich” also reported on Facebook about the soldier’s death.

Mikitenko received 90% of the burns on his body, he was hospitalized in serious condition, said the press secretary of the National Police, Oksana Blishchik, in a comment to Ukrainska Pravda. Police said they did not know the motives for the man’s act.
Yulia Mikitenko told the Public that her father committed such an act for political reasons.

Before the auto fire, the army posted posts on Facebook criticizing the current government. On the day of the incident on October 11, at 0.41, he wrote the following: “I think how am I going to burn?!. Like Vasily Stus ?! He will have enough strength to show that Ukraine is everywhere! Enough! Come out all, brothers, as on the 24th! Take up arms and defend our native Ukraine!
A day earlier, he called to go to the Office of the President of Ukraine to “explain how we live at the front and how we protect Ukraine.”
In 2014, Mikitenko took part in the battles near Slavyansk as part of the volunteer battalion of the Ukrainian National Guard named after Sergei Kulchitsky. During the evacuation of the downed helicopter in Karachun, he was injured and had a group of disabled people. After treatment, he served in various combat units in the JFO area, the public organization said.
