Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that a strong army is a guarantee of greater peace and free development of Ukraine. Today, according to the president, power is focused on the maximum development of the Ukrainian army.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the swearing-in ceremony of the students of the Ivan Bohun military high school in Kiev on October 14 expressed the hope that the silent regime in Donbass will become stable and permanent. His speech was broadcast by the Office of the President of Ukraine on Facebook.
“Today we are doing everything possible to end the war and not lose our heroes. For peace to come to Ukraine. Today is the 80th day since the announcement of the ceasefire. And despite the attempts to interrupt it, We hope that there will be silence in eastern Ukraine, stable and constant, “Zelensky said.
The peace offensive, according to Zelensky, does not mean the end of state support for the military.
“Today, the government is focused on the maximum development of the Ukrainian army. We are increasing spending in the defense and security sector,” the president said.
Ukraine should not only have powerful ground forces, but also fighter jets, a fleet and missile defense systems, Zelensky said.
“Only a strong army will guarantee the greater peace and free development of Ukraine,” he said.
In 2014, immediately after the annexation of Crimea, Russia launched an armed aggression in eastern Ukraine. The fighting is between the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the one hand, and the Russian army and the Russian-backed militants who control parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, on the other. The Russian Federation does not officially recognize its invasion of Ukraine, despite the facts and evidence presented by Ukraine.
On July 22, 2020, the trilateral contact group agreed to a full and comprehensive ceasefire in Donbas starting at midnight on July 27. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the Joint Forces in Donbass would respond to enemy bombardments even after the ceasefire went into effect.
On August 26, the JFO headquarters reported that during the first month of a full and complete ceasefire in Donbas, there were no combat losses or injuries in the ranks of the Ukrainian army.
On September 6, on the 42nd day of the armistice, militants in Donbass attacked Ukrainian positions in the Donetsk region and one soldier was wounded. On the same day, another Ukrainian military man was killed in the Lugansk region as a result of bombing by militants.
Since then, the militants have periodically shelled the positions of the Ukrainian army. In particular, on 18 September they violated the ceasefire twice by opening fire with a grenade launcher in the Vodyanoye area. On 10 October, near the same settlement, the militants fired once with a grenade launcher. Then these two cases of losses among the Ukrainian military were not.
On October 13, militants violated the ceasefire six times in the Donbass. The Ukrainian army did not suffer.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ruslan Khomchak, believes that the likelihood that local hostilities will resume in Donbas remains.
