The Day of the Defender of Ukraine was officially established by presidential decree of October 14, 2014.

Traditionally, October 14 in Ukraine is celebrated as the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks, whose patron saint was the Mother of God.

On Wednesday October 14, Ukraine celebrates Defender’s Day, the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks and the Protection of the Blessed Theotokos, as well as the day of the creation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.

The Day of the Defender of Ukraine was officially established by the decree of President Petro Poroshenko of October 14, 2014 “to honor the courage and heroism of the defenders of the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the military traditions and the victories of the people Ukrainian, to further strengthen the patriotic spirit in society and to support the initiative of the Ukrainian public. “

By the same decree, Poroshenko canceled Defender of the Fatherland Day, which was previously celebrated on February 23.

The date October 14 was not chosen by chance: on this day the Christian holiday of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos is celebrated, and in 1999 the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks was also established.

Since ancient times, the Mother of God has been the patroness of the Ukrainian Cossacks and of all Ukrainian armed formations. It was on the Feast of the Intercession that the Great Rada took place in Ukraine, in which the ataman was elected and the most important issues were resolved.

Today, in many regions of the country, thematic and physical culture festivals and patriotic competitions are held, special exhibitions are organized in museums, and the day before thematic lessons are given in schools.

It was previously reported that they want to change the name of Ukraine Defender’s Day. The Verkhovna Rada plans to change the name of the holiday to honor the heroism of men and women fighting for Ukraine.
