Apple introduced a line of iPhone 12 smartphones. What will they be and when will they be on sale?
On October 13, Apple held a second Fall 2020 presentation (at the first, the company showed the Apple Watch and new tablets; according to Bloomberg, there will also be a third in November, where it will show the MacBook on ARM mobile processors). As was known long before the announcement, the company introduced the iPhone 12. In addition, the company showcased the affordable HomePod mini smart speaker, but the introduction of full-size AirPods Studio headphones, as well as AirTags smart keychains, Apple again postponed .
League.Tech talks about new products.
iPhone 12: prices, specifications, sales start
This year, Apple has expanded its line of smartphones to four (more precisely, even five; in the spring, the company launched the iPhone SE 2020). Now, the line includes a smartphone in a cheaper price category: the iPhone 12 mini.
The iPhone has a new design: it has become “sharper” in the spirit of the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. The “fringe” remained and decreased in size. This year’s key color is navy blue, similar to the Apple Watch Series 6.
Updated protective glass. The new one was called Ceramic Shield. The technology was developed by engineers at Apple and Gorilla Corning. It is considered a leader in the smartphone screen protector industry, and its protective glasses are used by all major manufacturers.
In addition, the entire line received OLED displays. According to unofficial data, for cheap iPhones they were made by the Chinese company BOE, for Pro – by Samsung, which now has the best technologies on the market. As for the matrix, in the presentation Apple was a bit misleading, comparing OLED with LCDs from previous generations of younger iPhones, and not with OLED screens on Android flagships, which it is inferior to.
All new items are powered by Apple’s latest processor: A14 Bionic. It is the world’s first 5nm processor, making it the most powerful and energy efficient. But as Liga.Tech already wrote earlier, Apple smartphones are already over-performing, like flagship Android smartphones. However, it seems that in the Pro version Apple has found a use of the excessive processing power of smartphones.
The iPhone 12 has improved the night mode of the camera. Now the smartphone shoots better in the dark. The improvements apply to all models, including front cameras. In the twelfth series of iPhones, Apple increasingly uses computational photography algorithms to improve night photography and other challenging modes.
This year, the company has more clearly divided the regular iPhone and Pro versions; the latter are aimed at those who are interested in advanced photography and video capabilities. They have more expensive optics and more software capabilities. The iPhone 12 Pro received triple camera modules with lidars to work with augmented reality applications. The cameras capture photos in a special Apple ProRAW mode, as well as HDR video (with a wider color gamut) and Dolby Vision HDR. Apple invited a filmmaker to the presentation to discuss the ability to record movies on the iPhone 12 Pro.
Unsurprisingly, all versions of the iPhone 12 received 5G support. Tim Cook spoke about the opportunities 5G networks provide in the United States today. He also assured that the iPhone 12 supports the maximum number of frequencies on the market and is partnering with 100 operators.
The iPhone 12 and its mini version received dual cameras with an improved module for night shots, aluminum ends, 4 GB of RAM and 64 to 256 GB of internal. The Pro versions are equipped with triple cameras, steel body elements, 6GB of RAM, and the built-in volume starts at 128GB and ends at 512GB.
Judging by the fact that in previous years cheaper Apple novelties sold better, next season the iPhone 12 mini will be the new success. In terms of features, the model is comparable to mid-range Android smartphones, while the price is roughly twice as expensive.
With this model, Apple probably wants to retain an audience segment for which the availability of new models is important. After all, for the same money, Android makers offer flagship features and the most expensive materials. The company likely hopes to reduce the drop in sales without cheapening the other devices in the line to please the market. The mini is marketed as “the iPhone for those who don’t need a big screen.” It is also the smallest 5G smartphone.

Mag safe is another feature of the iPhone 12 that makes wireless charging more convenient. This is a magnetic block that allows you to connect the wireless charger directly to the location in the case where charging will occur. Company partners will be able to use this feature for iPhone 12 charging cases and accessories.
There will be no chargers in the box with the iPhone 12, but there will be an “enhanced” USB Type-C to Lightning cable.
HomePod mini: price, specifications, sales start
HomePod is one of the most disastrous Apple devices since Tim Cook. While the market is being captured by cheap devices from Google and Amazon, Apple tried to make as much money as possible with a smart speaker with a rather weak “intellectual” component (Siri as an assistant is inferior to Amazon’s and Google’s Alexa). Their share of sales has disappeared in the “other” category.
HomePod mini looks like a bug fix. The main feature of the novelty is a deeper integration with other Apple devices, in particular, the ability to exchange messages with devices of other family members or play music on multiple speakers at the same time. This fully reflects Apple’s vision of integrating the user more deeply into its ecosystem.
