According to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, he is not clinging to audience ratings or power, but sees the key task as concluding peace with Russia and returning the territories it has taken.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with the host of the program Talk to Stephen Sakur that he will admit his failure if he fails to end the war with Russia. The transcript of the interview is in charge of “BBC News Ukraine”.
According to Zelensky, he still believes that Moscow will return the occupied territories.
“I believe in this. Otherwise, I would not go to the presidency of Ukraine. It is very difficult, and here we need the help of the whole world, it is true. But I do not lose this faith,” he said.
The head of state answered affirmatively to Sakura’s question about whether he would admit to the people his failure if peace did not come.
“This is not a problem for me. I immediately said that I do not cling to the ratings or to power. If I cannot end the war, then another person must come who can end this tragic history between our countries,” he added. Zelensky said.
In 2014, immediately after the annexation of Crimea, Russia launched an armed aggression in eastern Ukraine. The fighting is between the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the one hand, and the Russian army and the Russian-backed militants who control parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, on the other. The Russian Federation does not officially recognize its invasion of Ukraine, despite the facts and evidence presented by Ukraine.
Zelenskiy, who took over the presidency in 2019 under the banner of ending hostilities in Donbas, argues that the war can only be stopped through high-level negotiations.
