The Belarusian nuclear power plant is expected to enter service in 2021.
A controlled chain reaction was started in the reactor of the first power unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. This was reported on October 11 by the Russian agency Interfax, referring to the press service of the Belarus Ministry of Energy.
The ministry said that “the reactor plant has been brought to the minimum level of controlled power”, which is “the beginning of the reactor life cycle.”
In the near future, the reliability of the first power unit will be verified, after which a power start-up will be carried out with inclusion in the Belarusian electrical system.
The first BelNPP unit, located near the town of Ostrovets in the Grodno region, was supposed to be put into operation in 2018, but the deadline was not met. Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich said in an interview with SB newspaper that the launch would take place in the first quarter of 2021. The launch of the second power unit is expected in 2022.
The general contractor for the construction is Atomstroyexport, which is part of the Russian Rosatom corporation. According to the project, BelNPP will consist of two power units with a capacity of 1,200 MW each.
