The award is said to have been awarded to efforts to combat hunger, contributions to improve peace conditions in conflict-affected areas, and to prevent hunger from being used as a weapon in war.

The World Food Program is the food aid unit of the United Nations.

It provides food to about 90 million people a year, of which 58 million are children. From its headquarters in Rome and from offices in more than 80 countries around the world, the organization helps people who cannot support themselves and their families.
