Advanced Micro Devices today announced the first processors based on the promising Zen 3 microarchitecture. As predicted, desktop CPUs codenamed Vermeer entered the Ryzen 5000 line, leaving the Ryzen 4000 series for Renoir APUs (Zen 2 ).

With the transition to Zen 3, the “red” chipmaker intends to outperform competing solutions not only in raw computing power, but also in single-threaded performance. For starters, the key features of the Zen 3 microarchitecture are worth mentioning. In Ryzen 5000 processors, the company will continue to use a multi-chip design, putting up to three crystals on a PCB: one / two 7nm chiplets with x86 cores Zen 3 and an I / O chip.

The main innovation is the move to solid 8-core CCX drives, which provide better inter-core communication latency and access to the L3 cache than two 4-core Zen 2 modules.

Combined with other enhancements, AMD was able to achieve a 19% improvement in IPC (instructions executed per clock cycle) over Zen 2, as well as a 24% better performance / watt ratio. When comparing the energy efficiency of the Zen 3 with that of the first-generation Zen, the company claims a 2.4x or 2.8x superiority in the case of the Intel Core i9-10900K.

Chiplets for AMD Zen 3 processors are released at TSMC factories using 7nm technology. By the way, a 5 nanometer pipe will already be used for Zen 4.

The AMD Ryzen 5000 processor lineup for the AM4 platform is initially represented by four products: the 6-core Ryzen 5 5600X, the 8-core Ryzen 7 5800X, the 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X, and the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X. All of them will be compatible with motherboards based on AMD 500 series chipsets (after UEFI update). The B450 / X470 boards will also be able to incorporate Zen 3, but the corresponding firmware release depends on the manufacturer.

The company has backed up its claims of leadership in single-thread with the results of its own tests. For example, the Ryzen 9 5900X finished Cinebench R20 with 631 points, while the Intel Core i9-10900K surpassed it with 544 points. Meanwhile, in games, this CPU turns out to be a quarter (26%) faster than its Ryzen 9 3900XT predecessor and in most projects it bypasses the Intel LGA1200 platform flagship.
