Mass protests against the Alyaksandr Lukashenka regime, which has ruled the country since 1994, harshly cracking down on the opposition and independent media, have continued in Belarus since August 9.
Anti-government protests broke out after the presidential elections. Belarusian protesters believe that the election results are falsified and demand the resignation of Alexander Lukashenko.
During the dispersal of the rallies, at least four protesters were killed. Thousands of people were arrested. Lukashenka-controlled security forces used water cannons, rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades against the civilian population.
The Belarusian dictator rejected any concessions and attempts at dialogue with protesters and the opposition, repeatedly claiming that Belarus’ western neighbors were behind the wave of protests.
Immediately after the elections, Lukashenko’s main rival, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, was forced to leave for Lithuania.
