Ukraine’s first racket Elina Svitolina (No. 5 WTA) continues her winning streak at the French Open.

In the fourth round of singles, the Ukrainian defeated Caroline Garcia of France (No. 45 WTA).

Roland Garros. Fourth circle
Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) – Caroline García (France) – 6: 1, 6: 3

The game took place with a very strong wind, which, of course, hindered both players, but the more attacking Garcia it was much more difficult to adapt to such conditions. The Frenchwoman frankly missed early in the first set, and Elina looked more composed and ready to make one more hit with each play.

All of this resulted in Svitolina’s comfortable lead and anger on the opponent’s face. Towards the end of the game, the Ukrainian was already openly mocking the French, throwing her punches from several turns, preventing her at all from adapting to the rhythm of the game. In addition, Elina was also practically wrong, which we have not seen in previous matches. Was it really such a strategic idea before the start of the competition? Maybe before there was no motivation. She was definitely in Garcia, no one doubted her even before the start of the match.

The start of the second set continued with the panorama of the first game, but the level of play of both players improved. Garcia adapted to the wind a bit and started playing sharper, Svitolina in response also had to level up. But anyway, the French could not put unsolvable problems to the Ukrainian, sometimes she managed to do several good rallies, but that is over.

Towards the end of the match, Elina softened the game a bit. She tried to play safer, she might give Garcia a little chance to come back, but today was our day.

Thanks to this victory, Svitolina surpasses Karolina Plishkova in the world rankings, now only Sofia Kenin (needs to reach the semifinals) and Petr Kvitova (needs to win) can overtake the Ukrainian.

In the quarterfinals, Svitolina will fight Nadia Podoroski from Argentina (No. 131 WTA, Q).

Note that Elina lost three head-to-head matches in a row to the Frenchwoman prior to this match.

This will be the Ukrainian’s third quarter-final at Roland Garros. Previously, they lost both matches in this round (to Ana Ivanovich in 2015 and Simone Halep in 2017).
