The water poisoning near Khalaktyrsky Beach in Kamchatka could have occurred due to an oil leak from a commercial ship. At the moment, the leakage of petroleum products has been eliminated, but the identity of the tanker has not yet been established.
This was announced by a representative of the emergency services of the Far East region, reports TASS.
“According to preliminary data, a commercial tanker followed the beach along the sea route with a leak, which was eliminated, but this caused a spill of petroleum products containing phenol. The ownership of the ship has not been established at the moment, it is being carried out a search, “the source said.
According to him, “routes of active movement of maritime freighters pass through this region of the Pacific Ocean.”
Experts say that excess phenol and petroleum products were found in three areas of Avacha Bay in the territory of Kamchatka. As a result of the oil leak, a massive death of marine animals was recorded in the bays of Bolshaya and Malaya Lagernaya and in the bay of Babya.
The deputy prime minister – plenipotentiary of the president of Russia in the Far Eastern Federal District, Yuri Trutnev, has already given instructions to establish the reasons for the mass release of animals in the region.
