According to the civil protection director of the French Interior Ministry Jeremy Krunchamp, 20 people died from the consequences of the flood, at least eight are considered missing.

The storm hit the coast of France on Thursday afternoon. Brittany in the northwest and the Côte d’Azur in the southeast were hit particularly hard.

Around 850 lifeguards work in the southeastern Alpes-Maritimes department.

The Aila storm was also reported to have left more than 60,000 homes without electricity in Finland.
