Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin on Facebook broke the news. At the age of 48, the legendary Pitmen player Serhiy Atelkin died, who with his team won the historic first gold of the Ukrainian league.

This morning a sad message arrived: Legendary soccer player Shakhtar Sergei Atelkin is gone. A charismatic player with a strong character and the ability to score the biggest goals – that’s how we remember him on the pitch. An incredibly kind and bright person, always ready to help – that’s how it was in life.

Blessed memory of Sergei Atelkin. His name will always be in Shakhtar history and in the hearts of the fans.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends, – wrote Palkin on social networks.

Sergey Atelkin was born on January 8, 1972. A graduate of Shakhtar Donetsk, he made his debut with the main team in 1990 as a forward. Besides the Pitmen, he played in Flint (Kremenchug), Lecce (Italy), Boavista (Portugal), Metallurg (Donetsk). He played two games for the Ukraine team.

Together with Shakhtar, he became the champion of Ukraine, he won the Ukrainian Cup four times.
