Along with the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G smartphones, Google, as expected, also introduced the Chromecast set-top box with Google TV, previously codenamed Sabrina, to replace the 2016 Chromecast Ultra. We all knew about the new product long before announcement, so now let’s briefly summarize.
The next generation Chromecast comes in an oval shape rather than a round like the old Chromecast Ultra, with a small HDMI cable to connect to a TV. Chromecast with Google TV is a completely independent device. This means that you no longer need to use a smartphone to display content on the TV screen.
The new product supports 4K video transmission at 60 frames per second. High dynamic range HDR, HDR10, HDR10 +, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos are also supported. The package contains a remote control (it has separate buttons to start YouTube and Netflix, a button to call a voice assistant, as well as side keys to adjust the volume).
Chromecast box with Google TV works with Google TV. The May rumors turned out to be only a half truth: Android TV will remain the primary operating system for televisions.
At the same time, Google TV is a branded user interface based on search and the Google Assistant. Third-party apps (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, and HBO Max) are built into search – the home screen displays a variety of content available on various streaming services.
The images below provide detailed specs for Chromecast with Google TV and remote.
Chromecast with Google TV will go on sale in the US on September 30 for $ 49, in Europe on October 15. There are three colors to choose from: white, blue, and orange (Google calls them “snow, sky, and sunrise”).
As for the Chromecast Ultra, it seems to be the same story as the Pixelbook. In the US, the device can no longer be purchased from the Google Store online or any other major retailer. Not formally “out of stock” – Google claims it is still available at “select retailers.” But it is very difficult to buy it now. As The Verge noted, Chromecast Ultra is no longer for sale at Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, The Home Depot, Staples, etc., and B&H Photo explicitly states “discontinued” in the product description. That is, in fact, the Chromecast Ultra has been retired.
Interestingly, the new Chromecast will not support Stadia’s proprietary game streaming service at launch; Google promises it only in the first half of 2021. That is, for those who care about Stadia support, the only option is the $ 100 Stadia Premiere Edition, which includes a Chromecast Ultra and a Stadia controller.
Some may be annoyed by the lack of an Ethernet connector on the new Chromecast, which was present in the last generation. For those who need one, Google offers a proprietary 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter for $ 20. A set of Chromecast with Google TV and an Ethernet adapter costs the same $ 70 as the Chromecast Ultra.
It remains to be added that the $ 30 Chromecast 2018 will continue to ship alongside Chromecast with Google TV.
