The German Super Cup was originally intended to be a match between the champion of the last German Bundesliga draw (“der Meister”, locally) and the winner of the German Cup. However, Bayern Munich once again managed to take home two trophies in the national arena, for which the country’s vice-champion (“der Vize-Meister”) – Borussia Dortmund was sent to the rivals of the “Red Car”. The regulations for this competition do not clearly state which of the clubs should accept the deciding match (often this was the runner-up or the Cup winner), so the blind tie ordered the informational match to be played on the field Allianz-Arena.
The UEFA Super Cup had to pay with a great defeat in the domestic arena against Hoffenheim (1: 4); Such a situational success rate had been offered to the Hans-Dieter Flick team a week earlier. And if such a maneuver was allowed for Bavaria, then the Borussia Dortmund fans barely turned a blind eye to the 0: 2 away from Augsburg made by the “bumblebees” on the last day of the German Bundesliga. It is quite possible that this is almost the first time in Super Bowl history when the teams that participated in the final game came close to a head-to-head duel in case of synchronous failures in the regular championship. But for Bavaria, there was also the need to get revenge for the defeat of a year ago at Zignal Iduna Park.
The teams started the game in mixed possession and there was no need to speak of moments at the gate for almost a quarter of an hour of play. Dortmund faced problems in transitions to attack, which were caused by the absence of several key players in this line. Royce’s experience was clearly not enough to overcome Bavaria’s defense. However, the Munich team did not do well with the lineup either, because Flick had to find a place for Xavi Martínez in midfield, and Kimmich, with such a formation, got into the point guard zone in the triangle.
The hosts of the arena were the first to create the moment. Davis, with a striker between Meunier’s legs, developed a counterattack down the left flank, through Müller, the ball hit Lewandowski on the right flank, and Robert gave into the penalty area for Tolisso. Such a swift attack from the “Red Machine” was not the only one. At the end of the first half hour of the match, Thomas Muller scored his next goal. A radio controlled advance from the depths of the left flank reached Davis’ far post, and the German midfielder ran successfully with a header to the far corner of the goalkeeper.
Bayern, towards the end of time, began to play a risky pass in their own field, for which they were instantly punished by their opponents. Pavar presented the ball to the bumblebee players on the flank, after which Holland led Brandt to the right flank of the penalty area into shock position. Nothing foreshadowed problems for the Munich club, the score remained until the break with a margin of two goals in their direction, but the Borussia ball changed the situation at its roots without the extension scheduled at the end of regulation time.
Did the pattern of play change after the break? No. Bayern were in control of the ball, Dortmund played on the counterattacks and it was the visitors’ tactics that seemed most successful at first. Holland fled towards goal after Lewandowski was pinned down in midfield and passed Neuer. And it doesn’t matter at all that the “bumblebees” haven’t had special moments before, right? The Munich players had to grit their teeth in disgust, again spending most of their playing time on the ball in the other half.
They scored their goal for the third time almost under the final whistle. Lewandowski’s attack down the right wing ended with a cross to the center of Kimmich’s penalty area, which Hitz managed with the first blow, but no one could wait, nor, in addition, repel Yosua’s heel finishing in the fall. This is how the intended objectives are achieved, with a triple diligence.
The final whistle of Bibiana Steinhaus, the first female referee in Bundesliga and German Super Cup history to play her last professional match, determined the winner of the reporting game. Bayern Munich lifted the first trophy of the new season at home.
