The contract was signed in the presence of Vladimir Zelensky.
The new strategic agreements are a continuation of the fruitful 20-year partnership between Ukraine and the United States, Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.
The national nuclear power generation company Energoatom has signed a contract with the American Westinghouse Electric Company for the supply of nuclear fuel for the VVER-440 reactors of the Rovno NPP. This was reported by the press service of President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, September 30.
The Ukrainian leader is reported to have met with Westinghouse CEO Patrick Fragman.
During the meeting, a protocol of intent was also signed to develop cooperation between the supplier company and a separate division of NAEK Energoatom – Atomenergomash.
“This document provides for the manufacture of Westinghouse fuel components by Atomenergomash with a sales market outside Ukraine, an increase in the range of fuel components that can be manufactured by Atomenergomash. It is also planned to manufacture equipment for fuel inspection VVER- 1000 and / or VVER-440, “the statement said.
Following the signing of the documents, Zelensky recalled that Ukraine at one point became the first country in the world to manage to diversify the supply of nuclear fuel for VVER-1000 reactors. With the new contract, Ukraine will be one of the first countries to receive alternative fuel for the VVER-440 reactors.
The head of state also noted that the new strategic agreements are a continuation of the fruitful 20-year partnership between Ukraine and the United States regarding the diversification of fuel supply to Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.
Moreover, the head of state said that the nuclear industry in Ukraine has enormous potential, which should be actively used. For this, it is necessary to create new capacities and build new energy units. We are talking about the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant, which Zelensky recently visited during his work trip.
“We are already considering the budget for next year. We will talk about the possibility of completing the third and fourth power units,” Vladimir Zelensky said.
Let us remind you that Ukraine is reducing the import of nuclear fuel from Russia. In 2018, the share of Russian nuclear fuel was almost 72%, and in 2019 it fell to 57%.
