Nagorno-Karabakh: 16 Armenian soldiers killed

Conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh

The Azerbaijan General Prosecutor’s Office reported that 14 civilians were injured in Nagorno-Karabakh.

16 Armenian soldiers died as a result of the clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh, more than 100 were injured, the Armenian Defense Ministry reported, citing the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Deputy Defense Minister Artur Sargsyan.

“According to preliminary data, 16 soldiers died and more than 100 were injured on the Armenian side,” the ministry said.

Earlier, the Azerbaijan Prosecutor General’s Office reported that the number of injured civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh increased to 14 at 3:50 p.m. on September 27.

As reported, on the morning of September 27, the Armenian authorities reported that Azerbaijan had launched missile attacks on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlements. At the same time, Azerbaijan announced that Armenia had started hostilities and noted that its troops had launched a counter-offensive operation along the entire front line in Nagorno-Karabakh.

In 1988, the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region, inhabited mainly by Armenians, announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1994, mediated by Moscow, an armistice agreement was signed, ending active hostilities in the region, but leaving Karabakh and the surrounding regions of Azerbaijan under Armenian control.

During the six years of the war, more than 30 thousand people have died. The peace accord came to a standstill after talks between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2009.
