The Ukrainian failed to become world champion.
The WBC middleweight world title fight between Jermall Charlo (31-0) and Ukrainian Sergey Derevyanchenko (13-3) took place.
The fight turned out to be competitive and one of the best in boxing’s current year. Charlo took the lead early in the fight and managed to seriously shake up the Ukrainian challenger in the third round. However, Derevyanchenko remained on his feet and continued the fight.
Charlo looked better from round to round, but at the end of the fight the fatigue began to take its toll. In the middle rounds of the fight, Derevyanchenko developed a bruise, his left eye swam, and Sergei began to see the opponent’s movements worse.
In the later rounds, Derevyanchenko looked somewhat better, but his efforts weren’t enough to end the fight earlier than planned, and the judges gave the champion the lead by unanimous decision (116-112, 117-111, 118-110). .
For Derevyanchenko, this loss was the third in three championship fights, while he lost all by decision.
