North Korean (DPRK) border guards shot and killed a South Korean Ministry of Fisheries official while he was on a boat at sea. DPRK leader Kim Jong-un has officially apologized to Seoul for this incident.
It is reported in the South Korean edition of Yonhap.
According to the newspaper, the North Korean leader sent a letter to the South Korean leadership. The letter says that Kim Jong-un is “very sorry” for “disappointing” South Korean President Moon Jae-in and other Koreans.
Pyongyang reportedly instructed the military to create a system to record the entire process of ensuring the security of the maritime border to prevent similar cases in the future.
In the letter, the DPRK leader outlined his version of events off the country’s coast: the South Korean was allegedly first interrogated from a distance, but when he tried to get closer to his boat, the man started to flee, so the border guards fired more than 10 shots.
He also denied information that the military had burned the body of the murdered man, noting that they had only burned the boat.
Recall that at the end of August, the DPRK tightened control on the border with China. The North Korean army was allowed to shoot to kill.
