Jose Borrell
The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, after a visit to Kiev and a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that the EU is not an ATM or a charity.
This is stated in his statement on the website of the European Union.
“As I told the president, the European Union is not a charitable organization or an ATM. The best way for us to support Ukraine is to help reform the country, but only the Ukrainians themselves can implement these reforms,” Borrell said .
He added that Ukraine remains on the EU agenda and that the continuation of reforms is now essential.
“Our support will continue, but it is also linked to the urgent need to strengthen the rule of law and fight corruption,” said the diplomat.
Borrell said that Zelenskiy’s election in April 2019 was a sign of the strong will of Ukrainians to fight corruption and loosen the oligarchs’ grip in the country. However, observers note that the pace of reforms, including the implementation of obligations under the Association Agreement, has slowed.
Recall that Borrell previously promised Ukraine that he would not eliminate visa-free travel, but demanded to appoint the “correct” judges.
As reported by “Strana”, the European Union’s diplomatic chief Borrell arrived in Ukraine to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky on September 22.
