VKontakte avoided the blockade in Ukraine
The VKontakte mobile application in Ukraine was made available not because of the lifting of sanctions, but because of the change in proxy servers, which made it possible to avoid blocking.
Ukrainian cybersecurity specialists interact with international colleagues to develop measures to block VKontakte on the territory of Ukraine. This was announced on Tuesday September 22 by Ukrinform with reference to the response of the NSDC apparatus to a journalistic request.
“The availability of the mobile application VKontakte in Ukraine was not due to the lifting of sanctions, but to changes in proxy servers, which made it possible to bypass the blocking of access of providers to this application on the territory of Ukraine,” says the reply.
The NSDC also recalled that the activation of Russian social media on the eve of local elections in Ukraine could pose a threat to the country’s national security.
As noted, the undersecretary of the Security and National Defense Council, Serhiy Demedyuk, believes that Russian special services use VKontakte to collect data on citizens of Ukraine and all who have it installed.
At the moment, specialists from the National Cybersecurity Coordination Center of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine are interacting with international colleagues and partners to develop measures to respond and block the operation of the VKontakte mobile application on the territory of Ukraine.
We will recall, on September 13, VKontakte announced that it had bypassed the blockade in Ukraine and that there are no obstacles for Ukrainian users of the mobile application as of now. The NSDC said the purpose of Russian social media is to spread disinformation and collect data.
