Security forces have tightened security measures in central Minsk – Oktyabrskaya Square near the Palace of the Republic has been cordoned off.

Armored vehicles are being brought into the center of the Belarusian capital, where an opposition demonstration is planned. This was reported by Interfax with reference to eyewitnesses on Sunday 20 September.

A convoy of ten armored vehicles, accompanied by traffic police vehicles, is reported to have entered Minsk and is heading towards the city center.

Meanwhile, the military and law enforcement agencies have stepped up security measures in central Minsk. The military cordoned off Oktyabrskaya Square near the Palace of the Republic. Metal fences are placed along the perimeter of the square. Military men with machine guns, helmets and bulletproof vests lined up near them. Barbed wire is being unwound around the plaza.

Security measures have also been strengthened in Independence Square and next to the building of the Presidential Administration of Belarus. Dozens of buses and trucks, as well as water cannons, ambulances, and other special equipment are parked on the streets adjacent to Independence Avenue. Access to the train station under the bridge on the Moskovskaya street alignment is blocked. Security officers are also on duty on the bridge.

In addition, six metro stations in Minsk have been closed.

Let us remember that on September 19 more than 300 participants of the women’s march were arrested in Minsk. Among those arrested was Inna Romashevskaya, an employee of the British embassy in Belarus.
