Ukraine’s first racket Elina Svitolina (No. 6 WTA) ended her fight in the Premier 5 Series in Rome.
In the quarterfinal match, the Ukrainian lost to Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic (No. 19 WTA).
Rome. 1/4 final
Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) – Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic) – 3: 6, 0: 6
Today’s game left a rather strange aftertaste. Losing to Vondrousova on the ground is not at all shameful, but to do it like Svitolina did, you still have to try.
It didn’t start out so bad. In the first three matches, Elina confidently played the first number against a more tired opponent, who was tormented by the Slovenian Herzog until midnight yesterday. Twice at the front desk I managed to win a double breakpoint, but the implementation was a complete failure. In almost any major rally the Ukrainian played somewhat mediocre, it is difficult to call him otherwise. As a result, the Czech woman took the lead with a break, it was hard to believe.
This situation encouraged Wondrowsova a lot, and she began to improve the level of the game, constantly humiliating Elina with her characteristic shortening. The Ukrainian woman did not read them at all, the Czech woman’s short swing was completely confusing and the deep positioning behind the baseline did not allow the use of leg speed. There were chances to save the game, but the double breakpoints have yet to be done somehow. But probably at another time.
In the second set Elina was already creating the illusion of a fight on the court, clearly she was not going to play three sets today. Vondrousova also added, but Svitolina did not draw any conclusions after the first game. As a result, the Ukrainian stops in the quarterfinals of her favorite tournament and will prepare for the main clay competition of the current year for several days.
For Vondrousova, this was only the third victory over a top-10 tennis player, before she defeated Simona Halep twice. Before, Svitolina won all three matches against the Czech.
In the next round, Marketa will play Eliza Mertens (No. 20 WTA) or Karolina Pliskova (No. 4 WTA).
Note that Svitolina is announced for the tournament in Strasbourg next week.
