According to law enforcement officials, on the night of September 8, the man kicked activist Volodymyr Balukh and left without help. The suspect was arrested today. The Interior Ministry did not mention the cause of the conflict.
A Kiev resident born in 1988 was informed of a suspected attack on a public figure, former Ukrainian political prisoner Volodymyr Balukh. This was announced on the afternoon of September 18 by the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
The motive and cause of the conflict that occurred between the suspect and Balukh on the night of September 8, the Interior Ministry does not name.
“It is now known that on the eve of Vladimir Balukh, together with his friends, he celebrated the anniversary of his release from captivity at the Kazak restaurant. Around midnight, Vladimir left the establishment and went to the Edem restaurant. There he had a conflict with a unknown. He fell and lost consciousness. After that, the attacker fled without providing assistance to the victim, “he said in the message.
The alleged attacker was arrested today. According to the investigation, before hitting Balukh, he came to visit an acquaintance who works as a security guard at a restaurant.
The man is accused of a crime according to Part 1 of art. 121 (intentional serious bodily injury) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Balukh was beaten in the Hydropark area in Kiev. His arm and collarbone were broken and he was also diagnosed with a serious head injury. On the night of September 8, he was operated on and then connected to a ventilator. The activist is still in a medical coma.
The president’s office demanded a swift and thorough investigation, not excluding the political version of the attack. Balukh was to stand in local elections in the Kiev region of “European Solidarity”.
September 7, 2019 Crimean activist Balukh returned to Ukraine in the framework of the exchange of detainees between Ukraine and Russia. He spent more than two and a half years in Russian places of detention. Lawyers and human rights activists said that Balukh became a victim of repression for his pro-Ukrainian position because of the Ukrainian flag, which was hung in the courtyard of his house.
