Rome. Third circle
Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) – Svetlana Kuznetsova (Russia) – 7: 6 (6), 6: 4
As expected, the match was very stubborn. On the court he met two phenomenally athletic athletes who are ready to fight for every point until the last. As in the first match of the tournament, Svitolina had problems with the first serve, this trump card could be used very rarely. But Kuznetsova gave a very good response in this match.
The game was difficult, scoring points on three hits was extremely rare. Physical preparation and concentration came to the fore. Sometimes Elina acted a bit hastily, but at the most important moments she was calm, playing unexpectedly sharp.
The first set was absolutely the same, in the middle of the party the girls exchanged breaks once. With the score 5: 5, the Russian woman won a double concealed set point, but the Ukrainian woman managed to neutralize the imminent danger. And in the next game, Kuznetsova had to play set points.
The tie-break continued the scenario of the entire set, but closer to the final, Elina played in the most active way possible, winning several important points. We managed to complete it with an effective transfer from the backhand line.
The second game did not promise an easy ride, although Elina was ahead at the start 2: 0, and then after the exchange of breaks and 4: 2. In almost every match there was a fight, but still Svitolina’s advantage became more notorious. Kuznetsova did not have a bit of time and was more wrong than a tennis player can afford in a match against Elina. And if in the ninth game the Russian managed to save a double match ball on her serve, after the transition Elina rejected perfectly.
This victory will allow the Ukrainian woman from next week to regain her place in the top 5, and in theory, you can also compete for the top 4.
In the next round, Svitolina will play Marketa Vondrousova (No. 19 WTA) or Polona Herzog (No. 50 WTA).
Dayana Yastremskaya left the tournament earlier.
