In the second round match, the Ukrainian defeated Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (No. 36 WTA).

After the defeat in the doubles match, many became concerned about Svitolina’s preparation for the clay season. But we must not forget that Elina, to put it mildly, is not the best doubles player, and her trump cards are completely different.
The rival for the return was not the best. Pavlyuchenkova, although she prefers faster surfaces, still has 3 wins in WTA clay tournaments. In terms of movement on the court, the Russian woman is some speeds behind, but the firepower on her is a higher level.
It all started predictably: Anastasia wanted to score as soon as possible and Svitolina tried to earn more points through tactics and by attracting unforced errors. But it was not an absolutely defensive game, at any convenient moment the Ukrainian tried to attack. When this happened, Palyuchenkova often no longer ran after the ball. But Elina was lacking some kind of variety, and the first serve was lacking. Oddly enough, with such a first ball hitting percentage, she never allowed her opponent to break. At the reception, the chances were frankly small, but the only break point was achieved, which brought victory in the game.
In the second set, Svitolina started serving the first a little softer and immediately left the serve. Palyuchenkova was leading 3: 0, but had a feeling that she would not be able to keep the lead. Neither one nor the second player were particularly stable in today’s game. As is often the case, after a first set relying on service, in the second there were only breaks. The girls at the reception began to score much better points, the intrigue increased. With the score 4: 4, the Ukrainian managed to make a hidden double ball, but could not serve for the match. There was a long struggle for more or less, but at this time the Russian woman turned out to be more successful.
In the tie-break, the game was on an equal footing until the moment when Svitolina in the final points showed that she was still superior to Pavlyuchenkova in class. Elina was not afraid to play clean and unconventional, having deservedly won this match. A good win to come back, which also showed more work to be done.
In the next round, Svitolina will play either Anette Kontaveit from Estonia (No. 21 WTA) or Svetlana Kuznetsova from Russia (No. 38 WTA).
Earlier, Dayana Yastremskaya entered the third round. Before that, the best Ukrainian tennis players lost the doubles match.
