The situation with Navalny should not be linked to Nord Stream 2, Van der Bellen said.
Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen sees no reason to link the situation with Alexei Navalny to the Nord Stream 2 project. He said this on Tuesday, September 15, after a meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, TASS reports.
“I personally, I stress, personally do not see any connection between the case of Navalny and Nord Stream-2. Nord Stream-2 is for me a commercial project that essentially concerns Russia, Ukraine and European partners. In this particular case, we are talking diversification of gas supply. “This is a commercial issue,” said Van der Bellen when asked if he supported the idea of blocking the pipeline in connection with the Navalny incident.
He added that the question of the future of the pipeline should be decided in Europe, not the United States.
Earlier it became known that German Chancellor Angela Merkel did not rule out the influence of the development of the situation with Navalny on the decision to complete the construction of Nord Stream-2. Before that, she urged not to associate the poisoning with the project.
