The NSDC commented on the activation of Vkontakte

Russian social media intensified on the eve of local elections in Ukraine. Their goal is to spread disinformation and collect data.

Bypassing the blockade of the Russian social network Vkontakte aims to collect data and spread disinformation and could threaten Ukraine’s national security on the eve of local elections. This was stated by the undersecretary of the National Defense and Security Council of Ukraine (NSDC) Serhiy Demedyuk, the department’s press service reported on Tuesday, September 15.

“Since the application of the sanctions, we have seen the periodic dissemination of information on the restoration of access to this social network on the territory of Ukraine, even despite the unstable operation of the proxy. We are sure that the Russian special services use this application to collect data on the citizens of Ukraine and all those who have it installed. ” , – said Demedyuk

He clarified that the activation of the application is not intended to give users access to the social network without using additional services to evade sanctions, but rather to collect data and spread disinformation.

“Such actions are usually carried out on the eve of important events. Now it is local elections in Ukraine,” Demedyuk stressed.

Specialists from the National Cybersecurity Coordination Center of the NSDC of Ukraine interact with international colleagues and partners to develop measures to respond to and block the operation of the VKontakte mobile application on the territory of Ukraine.

We will recall, on September 13, VKontakte announced that it had bypassed the blockade in Ukraine and that there are no obstacles for Ukrainian users of the mobile application as of now.

The Cabinet of Ministers reacted to the information and gave instructions to deal with the situation.
