It is noted that at the beginning of the meeting, Putin, in particular, said that the Russian Federation remains committed to all agreements with Belarus, including agreements on the CSTO and the State of the Union. The Russian leader also pointed out that the Belarusians themselves, without external indications, should resolve the situation in the country. Lukashenko, for his part, thanked Putin and all Russians for supporting the republic after the presidential elections.
The talks became the first personal meeting between Putin and Lukashenko after the presidential elections in Belarus on August 9, after which opposition protests began in the republic. Before this, the two leaders had several telephone conversations.
Earlier it was reported that during the meeting, Putin and Lukashenko agreed on a loan to Belarus in the amount of $ 1.5 billion.
Lukashenka also thanked the Russian for the support after the elections, noting that Belarus “needs to be closer to its older brother.”
