Ukraine receives member status of the Biarritz Association – Office of the President

Ukraine has received official participant status in the Biarritz Association, an international initiative for equal rights and opportunities for all, reported the press service of the President of Ukraine on September 12.

Ukraine’s accession to the “association” was initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenskaya in December 2019. Under the “partnership”, Ukraine has assumed obligations in five areas: development of a barrier-free public space that is friendly to families with children and people with limited mobility; teach the principles of equality between women and men; prevention of violence; reduce the wage gap between women and men; creating more opportunities for men to care for children.

The Biarritz Association was founded by the leaders of the G7 countries at a summit in the French city of Biarritz on August 25, 2019, chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron. The objective of the initiative is to strengthen the responsibility of the international community to achieve gender equality.

On June 19, the people’s deputies from the People’s Servants faction signed up to the Verkhovna Rada bill No. 3695 on equal opportunities for mothers and fathers in raising a child. The bill proposes to allow up to 14 calendar days of paid leave for men at the time of the birth of a child.

“This bill is Ukraine’s first step in fulfilling its obligations under the Biarritz International Association to establish equal rights for women and men in all spheres of life.
