The EU and Germany should abandon the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline following the alleged poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. This was announced on Monday by US President Donald Trump at a press conference, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported.
When asked by a journalist if he agreed with the idea of abandoning this project in response to what happened with Navalny, the US president replied: “Of course you do.”
Trump recalled that before the Navalny story, he opposed this project. “He didn’t even find out about Nord Stream 2 until Trump came along,” he said.
Trump emphasized that he was outraged that “Germany is concluding an agreement under which it will pay Russia billions of dollars, and at the same time, we in NATO must protect Germany from Russia.”
As previously reported, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her government have no intention of leaving Nord Stream 2 after the story of the alleged Navalny poisoning.
