The head of the Luhansk Regional State Administration, Sergei Gaidai, said that the restoration of economic ties with the occupied Donbass territories would be “a solid benefit”.

The head of the Lugansk Regional State Administration (RSA), Sergei Gaidai, announced the need to end the economic blockade of the occupied regions of Donbass. He told reporters about this on September 6 in Severodonetsk, according to Novosti Donbassa.

“I am in favor of reestablishing economic ties. We will receive continued benefits from this,” the official said.

He called the severance of ties “political speculation.”

“We lost around 2 billion UAH a year. How much have we lost over the years? Let’s say 8 billion UAH. How many roads could we build? … For example, building a regional hospital costs 5 billion from UAH … dollars and rubles remained. The hryvnia is also a certain link with Ukraine, “Gaidai explained.

In 2014, immediately after the annexation of Crimea, Russia launched an armed aggression in eastern Ukraine. The fighting is between the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the one hand, and the Russian army and the Russian-backed militants who control parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, on the other. The Russian Federation does not officially recognize its invasion of Ukraine, despite the facts and evidence presented by Ukraine.

On March 15, 2017, the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine decided to temporarily completely stop transport links with ORDLO and the movement of goods, except humanitarian ones.

The following day, the fifth president, Petro Poroshenko, put into effect the NSDC decree “in connection with a significant worsening of the security situation in Donbass, as well as the growing threats to Ukraine’s economic and energy security.

At the Trilateral Contact Group meeting in Minsk on June 5, 2019 Ukraine made a proposal to lift the economic blockade from certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, said OSCE Special Representative in Contact Group Martin Saidik.

Then the Attorney General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko said that trading with companies located in the temporarily occupied territories is possible only after their re-registration in the territory controlled by the government of Ukraine and their payment of taxes to the budget of Ukraine.
