Citizens were detained for participating in unauthorized mass events, said the president of the Belarusian Interior Ministry, Olga Chemodanova. Human rights activists claim that people with white, red and white flags were detained during the March for Unity.
Hundreds of people were arrested across Belarus on September 6 for taking part in protest actions, Olga Chemodanova, press secretary of the Belarusian Interior Ministry, told RIA Novosti.
According to her, the exact figure is scheduled to be announced on the morning of September 7. The reason for the arrest is citizen participation in unauthorized mass events.
The Viasna Human Rights Center has found out the names of 194 people arrested during the Unity March in Minsk. Siloviki mainly detained those holding white-red-white national flags, according to the report.
About 30 protesters were arrested in Brest. Arrests were also carried out in Grodno, Mogilev, Vitebsk, Baranovichi, Pinsk, Braslav, Shchuchin.
Some of the detainees have already been released, Vesna writes.
Some 100,000 people gathered for a protest in Minsk on September 6, marched through the city streets to the residence of President Alexander Lukashenko and demanded his resignation.
Mass actions in Belarus have been taking place since August 9. The protesters believe that the results of the presidential elections were falsified. According to official data, the current president of the country, Lukashenko, won with 80.1% of the voters. Opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya came in second with 10.1% of the vote. At the same time, alternative exit polls showed the opposite picture: Tikhanovskaya’s confident victory.
The Belarusian security forces violently dispersed the demonstrations, in particular with the use of stun grenades, rubber bullets and water cannons. According to official figures, killed four protesters.
