At Monza, Pierre Gasly achieved his first career victory and had a hard time finding the words after the finish …
Question: Pierre Gasly is the Grand Prize winner! What do you feel?
Pierre Gasly: This is an incredible success. I find it difficult to find words to describe my feelings. I can not believe this. Over the last year and a half, so many events have happened in my life … We were hoping that 8th place would be our highest this weekend.
When I joined AlphaTauri last year, we focused on making progress every day, getting stronger with every race. Last year in Brazil, the team helped me win the first podium of my career, and today, to win my first victory in Formula 1! In Italy! At Monza, speaking for the Italian team! I do not know what to say. This is incredible!
Question: You said that so many events have happened in your life in the last year and a half, and that you had to work hard to achieve success. Sometimes during difficult periods, thoughts come to you that all this is not for you …
Pierre Gasly: I already said – I’m not one of those who give up easily. I always had to make an effort to get what I wanted. This has been the case since the days of karting and continues to this day. The desire to perform better keeps me moving forward.
When he was driving first in the race, he knew what he wanted. I understood that if they beat me in the last laps I would be very upset about second position. I know myself, I wouldn’t like that. I literally did the best I could. At the beginning of the segment, I attacked to create space and prevent opponents from behind from taking advantage of the wake. The last five laps were very difficult …
Question: What were you thinking at the time?
Pierre Gasly: I attacked so hard that the tires stopped working, so much that I wanted this victory. Now we have it, but I still have a hard time believing it. I want to thank the team. Most of our employees are Italian and we are in Italy. They are sure to have a great evening.
Question: Probably even sleeping at night, you won’t drop the cup?
Pierre Gasly: Of course!
