Floods in Sudan. State of emergency declared for three months

In Sudan, due to the floods this year, 99 people have died, another 46 are hospitalized. Precipitation beat the records set in 1946 and 1988.

Sudan’s Security and Defense Council has declared a three-month state of emergency in the country due to the flooding and has declared Sudan a natural disaster area. This was announced on Saturday, September 5, by the Sudanese state agency SUNA.

In the country due to the floods this year, 99 people died, another 46 people were hospitalized. In total, around half a million people were affected by the floods. The water totally or partially destroyed more than 100,000 homes.

The number of floods and rains in Sudan this year surpassed the records set in 1946 and 1988. In addition, further growth is expected due to continued rains.

The Security Council has announced the formation of a supreme flood relief committee by the fall of 2020, according to SUNA.

Reuters, citing Sudan’s Minister of Labor and Social Development Lena El-Sheikh Manjub, writes that the number of floods and rains this year surpassed the records of 1946 and 1988. According to her, a further increase in rainfall is expected in the future.
