The EU will not impose sanctions against Lukashenka
Germany, supported by France and Italy, opposed the sanctions against the President of Belarus.
The European Union will not include the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, on the sanctions list. Die Welt reports this with reference to its own sources on Friday, September 4.
Germany, supported by France and Italy, opposes the imposition of sanctions against Lukashenka. According to the newspaper, Berlin and Paris want to keep communication channels open with Lukashenko, and the introduction of a sanction could prevent this.
At the same time, the Baltic states and Poland are demanding that Lukashenka be included on the EU sanctions list.
Note that the official list of sanctions against Belarus in the European Union is due to be published next week.
“Negotiations are extremely difficult, as each list must be approved unanimously by all member states,” a senior EU diplomat said according to the publication.
The list is supposed to include 16 to 19 people. Their assets will be blocked, as well as a ban on entry to the EU. At the same time, a formal vote to include Lukashenka has yet to take place. In informal negotiations, the EU refused to apply sanctions against the President of Belarus.
Let us remind you that previously Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia included 30 citizens of Belarus on the sanctions list, including President Alexander Lukashenko.
After that, Lukashenka spoke about the sanctions of the Baltic states. In response, Minsk may refuse the services of Baltic ports for transshipment of its cargo, the Belarusian president noted.
