Israeli Ambassador Calls For Action To Avoid Incidents Of Anti-Semitism In Uman

Lyon discussed with local authorities the prevention of a coronavirus outbreak in the city and acts of anti-Semitism.

Israel’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Joel Lyon, called on the Ukrainian authorities to take measures to avoid the tense situation in Uman. This was reported by the press service of the Israeli Embassy in Ukraine on Wednesday, September 2.

Lyon came to Uman to get acquainted with the preparation of the city and the region on the eve of the celebration of the Jewish New Year. He met with the head of the Cherkasy Regional State Administration, Sergei Sergiychuk, the Mayor of Uman Alexander Tsebriy, the heads of the National Police, hospitals and the State Emergency Service, as well as representatives of Bratslav Hasidism.

“It is important to coordinate with local leadership to prevent outbreaks of COVID-19 in the city. I asked all officials, I met with them to do everything possible to reduce tension in the city and prevent further acts of anti-Semitism,” Lyon said. …

Remember earlier in Uman, a Hasid was attacked in a supermarket. The victim was an Israeli with a residence permit in Ukraine, he had a broken nose. Soon, the police identified the Hasid attackers in Uman. There were six of them, all local residents. Now the performance of each of them is being legally assessed.

It was also reported that in Uman, the police are working in an intensive regime due to the arrival of pilgrims. Law enforcement officials will ensure that local residents and pilgrims comply with quarantine restrictions.
