The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has identified several witnesses who are willing to testify about the non-participation of the National Guard Vitaly Markiv, illegally convicted in Italy, in the murder of journalists. Ukrainian law enforcement officers are willing to cooperate with Italian colleagues to prove Markiv’s innocence.
This was stated by the Interior Minister, Arsen Avakov.
“Vitaly Markiv, our Ukrainian soldier has nothing to do with the murder of journalists Andrei Rokelli and Andrei Mironov. Our investigation has found some kind of important witnesses who give evidence that clearly shows Markiv’s innocence,” he said.
In turn, Interior Ministry investigator Maxim Tsitskaridze said 70 witnesses in the case had been questioned to prove Vitaly Markiv’s innocence.
“The chronology of the bombing was established and 70 people, 20 of whom were at the scene during the bombing, were questioned, 7 research experiments were carried out, as well as 5 additional inspections of the place,” he said.
Tsitskaridze said that the investigation has been carried out since November 2019 on behalf of the Attorney General of Ukraine.
He also recalled that Russian and Italian journalists died in the Slavyansk territory, occupied at that time.
Recall that in July 2019, the Italian court sentenced Vitaly Markiv to 24 years in prison.
In November, Ukraine filed an appeal in the Markiv case. The appeal was pending by the Lombardy Court of Appeal this spring.
Furthermore, the appeal in the Markiv case should be considered in one month.
