The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and the chairman of the House Special Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, said that only Russia is actively “interfering” in the US presidential elections. The announcement came in response to a decision by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to not hold presidential security briefings for Congress due to the leakage of classified information from past meetings.
This is stated in a joint statement by the Democratic congressmen.
Politicians point out that instead of transparency, the administration of US President Donald Trump has already sought to promote a false version of the equivalence of the interests of various countries in US elections and politics.
“The objectives and actions of Russia, China and Iran are not the same. Only one country, Russia, is actively taking a series of measures to undermine the presidential elections and ensure the result that the Kremlin considers most in its interests,” said the release.
Politicians called the intelligence’s denial of briefings “a shocking denial of its legal duty to report to Congress” and “a betrayal of the public’s right to know how foreign powers are trying to undermine our democracy.”
According to Pelosi and Schiff, the Trump administration is engaged in “a politicized effort to hide information related to the Congressional elections and from the American people.”
“We expect the administration and the intelligence community to provide us with complete and accurate information and resume briefings. If they do not wish, we will consider the full range of tools available to the House of Representatives to comply,” the statement read.
We will recall, US intelligence refused to hold briefings for members of Congress due to the leak of classified data from past meetings.
Earlier, US counterintelligence assessed Russia’s influence in US elections.
RBC-Ukraine also wrote that former US special counsel Robert Mueller, who was investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 US presidential election, said such interference was repeated.
