Former deputy prime minister of the government of Mykola Azarov, former Ukrainian ambassador to Belarus and longtime head of the Lugansk Regional Council, Viktor Tikhonov, died in Crimea at the age of 72 in Simferopol. The politician died of pneumonia.

Viktor Mikhailovich Tikhonov was born in the village of Shchetovo, Antratsytovsky district, Voroshilovgrad (Lugansk) region. From 1995 to 1998 he was the first vice president of the Lugansk regional state administration, and from 1998 to 2006 he was the head of the Lugansk regional council.
Tikhonov was a people’s deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of the V-VII convocations, until the summer of 2014 he was a member of the Party of Regions faction. On March 11, 2010, he assumed the position of Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for Regional Policy in the government of Mykola Azarov. On December 9, 2010 he became Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Public Services.
From August 2011 to November 2012, Tikhonov was the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Belarus.
