Orthodox Ukrainians celebrate the Savior of nuts or bread on August 29, which symbolizes the end of the harvest and the beginning of the sowing of winter crops. Housewives on this day bake bread and collect nuts in the garden. The Third Savior is invariably associated with the arrival of autumn and preparations for winter.
What is known about Nut Spas
Nut savior is also called the third, linen or not handmade. It is celebrated after the Assumption of the Virgin on August 28. In a series of August Spas, he is the last. On this day, it is customary to store grain for the winter, bake bread with the flour of the new crop, and collect hazelnuts.
The name of the Savior not made by hands is associated with the appearance of the first divine icon of Jesus Christ. According to Christian legend, the King of Mesopotamia, Avgarom, who was ill with leprosy, ordered the court artist to attend the Savior’s sermon and paint his portrait. The ruler wanted to use the face of the saint to heal himself.
Due to the large number of believers, the portraitist could not get close to the messiah and see his face. However, Jesus Christ himself approached the teacher and brought his face to the canvas, capturing it on it. The icon painter brought the canvas to the king, who eventually recovered.
After that, the king placed a non-handmade icon at the entrance to the city of Edessa. Later, the revealed image of the Savior was transferred to Constantinople and from it the first icons began to be painted. During the Fourth Crusade in 1204, the shrine was stolen from Hagia Sophia (now the Hagia Sophia Mosque, Ed.), his current whereabouts are unknown.
What is holy in the church?
In churches, it is customary to sanctify all the same gifts of nature as in previous Spas: honey, apples, grapes, pears. Fresh bread and other baked grain products are also brought in, symbolizing prosperity and health in the family. But the main thing in the consecration at Nut Spas are walnuts and walnut membranes with shells and leaves, which are used to prepare medicinal tinctures at home. Walnut branches are also sacred, from which toilet brooms are made.
Wells and other sources of drinking water are still enshrined in towns and outside the city. Often in the churches they tried to consecrate bedding and bedding with which they later made clothes and bedding.
The main prohibitions and signs of the day
The morning of the holiday Saturday begins in the church service. The needy are treated with cakes (sometimes they are baked early in the morning, adding grains, nuts and raisins to the dough), the poor are given alms. Refusing to take a person on vacation is believed to be a great sin.
Today they do not fight with their loved ones, they do not wish evil, so that the thoughts do not return like a boomerang. At the table, they thank the Savior for the harvest. The bread is placed in the center of the table. It is important to celebrate the holiday with prayer.
On August 28, along with the Dormition of the Theotokos, a two-week fast ends, so there are no more food restrictions at the Nut Spas.
There is a popular belief that on vacation it is necessary to buy bedding made of natural fabrics or a linen shirt, which will protect from the evil eye and help to recover from illness.
Formerly, the third saved was also called Cold because of the arrival of autumn. If you have a similar warm day, the winter will be short and there will be enough supplies. If the day was hot, the second half of September will be rainy and cold. If it rained, the fall should be warm.
A rich harvest of walnuts spoke of a good harvest of bread in a year. The departure of cranes with swallows to the south heralded frost in Pokrov on 14 October.
