Documents for Lukashenko’s registration arrived today at the CEC

The current President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is nominated for the sixth time as President. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the website of the Belarus Central Election Commission.

The CEC reportedly received documents from the initiative group to nominate Lukashenko for the presidency. Currently, 16 potential candidates have been registered, including opposition leader Oleg Gaidukevich (Liberal Democratic Party).

It should be noted that Lukashenko has been President of Belarus since July 1994, two years after the first elections, he held a referendum, changed the constitution, significantly expanded his powers and dissolved the opposition parliament.

He has been in office the longest among all European heads of state, not counting monarchs. Since 2001, he won the elections in the first round, obtaining at least 75% of the votes.

Recall that it was previously reported that the presidential elections in Belarus are scheduled for August 9. Lukashenko said that postponing the elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic would violate the country’s constitution.

The fact that Lukashenko is running for the next presidential term was announced in March 2019.
