During negotiations between the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak and the political advisers to the leaders of Channel Four, a ceasefire and unimpeded access for the OSCE mission to uncontrolled territories were discussed.
On Tuesday May 12, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak had a telephone conversation with political advisers to the leaders of Channel Four, reported Press service OP.
“The parties paid special attention to security concerns, achieving a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire and access to the OSCE monitoring mission in the Donbass territories not controlled by Ukraine,” said the Office of the President.
No agreements reached during the negotiations are reported.
In 2014, immediately after the annexation of Crimea, Russia launched armed aggression in eastern Ukraine. The fighting is taking place between the Ukrainian armed forces, on the one hand, and the Russian army and Russian-backed militants, who control part of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, on the other. Officially, the Russian Federation does not recognize its invasion of Ukraine, despite the facts and evidence presented by Ukraine.
Negotiations on the solution of the conflict are carried out within the framework of the tripartite contact group (Ukraine – OSCE – Russia) and Channel Four (Ukraine – Germany – France – Russia).
On December 9, 2019, the first Normandy Four leaders summit took place in Paris in three years. The final statement indicates that the parties agreed to a ceasefire, the opening of new control points, the exchange of detainees according to the “all for all” formula until December 31, 2019, the deployment of forces and assets in three new areas in the Donbass and the extension of the law for one year On the special procedure for local self-government in certain regions of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions “and the expansion of the mandate of the OSCE special monitoring mission. The arrangements were partially implemented.
The parties announced a new meeting four months later (it is supposed to take place in Berlin), but their exact date has not been determined.
On April 30, 2020, the four Normandy foreign ministers communicated by video conference. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said the conversation was constructive, but “it was sometimes stressful.”
