Ferrari confirmed the breakup with Sebastian Vettel at the end of the 2020 season. Vettel and Ferrari had been negotiating a contract extension for several months, but could not agree on their terms. Today, the Ferrari press office issued an official statement.
Sebastian Vettel: “My relationship with Scuderia Ferrari will end in late 2020.
To achieve maximum results in our sport, it is important that the parties work in complete harmony. My team and I realized that we have no common desire to stay together after the end of this season.
Financial problems played no role in our joint decision. I don’t think about money when it comes to making certain decisions, and it never will.
What has happened in the last few months has made us think about what our main priorities are in life. In the new situation, a new approach is needed. I will find time to reflect on how I see my future myself.
Scuderia Ferrari has a special place in Formula 1. I hope the team achieves the success it deserves. I want to thank the entire Ferrari family and, above all, their fans around the world, for the support they have given me for many years.
My immediate goal is to complete the long job with Ferrari with some more wonderful sporting moments, adding to what we already had. ”
Mattia Binotto, team leader: “This is a joint decision of the team and Sebastián, both parties believe that this will be better.
Given Sebastian’s bravery as a runner and a man, the decision was not an easy one. But there is no specific reason other than a common and friendly belief that the time has come to go our separate ways to achieve our goals.
Sebastian has already entered Scuderia’s history, 14 Grand Prix victories make him the third most successful driver in the team’s history. During five years of collaboration, he completed the season three times in the top three, making a significant contribution to the team’s continued presence in the Cup’s top three designers.
On behalf of all the Ferrari employees, I want to thank Sebastian for the high professionalism and human qualities he demonstrated during these five years, for which we share so many wonderful moments. We weren’t able to win the championship title together, which would be their fifth, but we believe we can accomplish a lot in this unusual 2020 season. “
