New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo noted that three children with coronavirus infection who died in the state had vascular inflammation and heart damage.
In the US state of New York, three children died of a rare inflammatory syndrome that may be associated with coronavirus infection. This was announced May 9 at a briefing by State Governor Andrew Cuomo, Reuters reports.
According to him, in children, including a five-year-old boy, there was inflammation of the blood vessels and heart damage. They were also diagnosed with COVID-19 or “related antibodies”.
Cuomo explained that health officials found 73 cases with similar symptoms, but have not yet reached a final conclusion. According to one version, there is a genetic basis for such a syndrome.
Scientists have not yet determined for sure whether there is a connection between the syndrome and the coronavirus.
The state governor called the situation “truly alarming” and noted that it was previously thought that young people were not at risk for coronaviruses.
More than 4 million cases of COVID-19 infection have been confirmed worldwide. Almost a third of them, 1,305,199, are registered in the United States. The United States represents more than a quarter of the deaths in the world (78 thousand). New York State is the leader in the number of deaths in the United States.
