South Korea’s Samsung company is making major strides toward larger, ultra-high resolution camera sensors. Last year, the company announced a 64 MP sensor, and then, along with Xiaomi, unveiled the flagship 108 MP sensor. The latter is used in the recently launched Galaxy S20 Ultra. The company is now announcing work on a new 600 MP sensor.
Yongin Park, executive vice president, chief of Sensor Business, said human eyes reach a resolution of about 500 MP. For comparison, most modern SLR cameras and smartphones offer 40 MP and 12 MP sensors, respectively. So the industry has a long way to go before it can fulfill the capabilities of the human eye. To do this, the company plans to develop camera sensors with a resolution of 600 MP.

Although balancing resolution and pixel size is difficult to achieve, as smaller pixels can reduce image quality, the company is developing advanced pixel integration technologies. Similar technologies will be used in future ultra-high-resolution camera sensors.

According to Park, most cameras available today can only capture images visible to the human eye (wavelengths 450 to 750nm), and sensors that can detect light waves beyond this range are hard to find. . UV light sensors can be used to diagnose skin cancer, and infrared camera sensors can help control quality in industrial cases. Samsung Systems LSI, an image sensor development company, is also working to create sensors that can capture odors and flavors.

However, Samsung says it wants to create camera sensors for autonomous vehicles, drones, and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
