The first reports of a shooting in a small town about 130 kilometers from Halifax, the capital, were reported to law enforcement officers on the night of April 18. When they arrived on the scene, they found several bodies inside and outside one of the houses.
Later, dead and burned houses were found elsewhere. Among those killed was a police officer and the mother of two children, Heidi Stevenson. Two burned police vehicles were also reported. Locals were asked not to leave the house.
Massacres in Canada occur less frequently than in the United States. As the country has stricter gun control laws, the Nova Scotia shooting is the largest murder in the country’s history since 1989, when 15 women were victims of the Montreal attack.
According to police, the suspect is dentist Gabriel Wortman, 51, who was dressed as a police officer in a police uniform and moved in a car disguised as a police car. Police first reported Wortman’s arrest, but it later emerged that he was dead.
The shooter’s motives are still unknown, and police have not identified a clear link between Wortman and some of his victims. Authorities will verify the version that the attack may be related to a pandemic coronavirus and the closure of companies that do not provide vital services.
