Traditions of Palm Sunday

Many popular Willow Week traditions and rituals are associated with willow. During Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, the inhabitants greeted him as a savior with palm branches and shouts of praise of “Hosanna!” But since palm trees do not grow in our latitudes, this symbol has been replaced by willow buds that are still blooming.

The people went to the willow tree in the forest before dawn, they picked her up and took her to the temple to consecrate her. You can cut branches only from young trees that do not have dry, hollow branches.

On Palm Sunday during worship in the church, the willow branches were consecrated. Then these bouquets were brought home, decorated with icons. And it remained for a year as a safeguard against diseases, nerves, fires, floods and other disasters.

Willow was attributed to the miraculous healing power. It was customary to eat willow buds for health and vigor. In willow broths the children were bathed to protect them from disease. Willow branches also sprayed houses and cattle of all kinds of problems.

The main ritual on Palm Sunday is the striking of the willow branches with each other and especially with the children. It was believed that one should wish each other health and strength, and then easily cleanse the holy willow; then any disease would disappear.

On Palm Sunday, you should get away from the hustle, pray, think about life and prepare for Easter.

During Lent on Palm Sunday, fasting is allowed, you can eat fish and drink wine.
