iPhone 8 has proven to be one of the least reliable
One of the most popular biometric authentication methods for smartphone manufacturers and users, the fingerprint scanner is far from the most secure.
This is stated in a statement by Talos Security Group (TSG).
According to recent tests, experts rated the protection of 80% of the devices on the market as low. The specialists managed to trick most of the sensors much more easily than expected.
Talos Security Group representatives have studied the scanner algorithm installed in Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and other companies devices.
A fake fingerprint was used to try to unlock the devices, which managed to bypass protection in 80% of cases. Apple iPhone 8, MacBook Pro (2018), and Samsung Galaxy S10 are among the most vulnerable devices.
Due to the fact that the sensor logic is based on the prediction of the impression image, in 90% of the cases, the hack was successful.
It is noteworthy that none of the twenty models prepared in the Samsung Galaxy A70 worked. However, the model had a drawback: the smartphone reads the prints much longer than most test participants.
The verdict of the experts from Talos Security Group has been disappointing: they say that the most common type of authentication cannot be called secure. Alternatively, they recommended using a pin to unlock the screen – the probability of guessing with a simple backhand is much less.
