Google Braille font

The company has announced that the Android operating system will now have Braille support. Visually impaired people will be able to use smartphones without additional equipment.

To use the TalkBack keyboard, Google has hired developers and users who already have extensive experience using this typeface. Together, they have developed a virtual keyboard that has only 6 buttons that correspond to one of the six Braille dots.

By pressing the desired combination, the user receives the desired letter or character. For example, to write the letter “A” you need to press button 1, to write “B” – buttons 1 and 2.

Use the dots to remove letters and words, enter new lines, and send ready text. Swiping left will remove the letter. If you use this gesture with two fingers, the word will be deleted. To add a space, you must swipe two fingers to the right to enter a new line. When you swipe up, a new text will appear.

The new feature will be available for all Android devices running Android 5.0 and later.

Braille font history

The relief font was designed in 1824 by the French Louis Braille.

Louis Braille in Braille

The invention is related to a tragic event that happened to a developer when he was only three years old. While working in his father’s workshop, he was injured, causing the eye to swell, and the boy lost his sight. Using only his tactile sensation, he invented a font that is still used by visually impaired people.

We also wrote earlier that the simultaneous translation feature appeared in Google Translate.
